A Haunted Speakeasy

An Invitation to a Haunted Speakeasy

The month of Halloween is here!  And so are our Halloween party invitations!  Thank goodness.  Although not quite as time consuming as last year’s, these were still a labor of love.  As invitations always are.  Our theme this year is a haunted speakeasy.  After much hemming and hawing over all of our theme options, a speakeasy just seemed to be the most fun.  And obviously, way better if it is haunted.  I designed the invitation to be filled with deco goodness and after we decided that our speakeasy would be called “The Wicked Web,” I realized that it also kind of looks like a web.  Funny how these things work out sometimes.  We also included a newspaper article with our backstory.  Megan, Corey, and I (under the names of Ava, Alice, and Nathaniel) owned a speakeasy in the 1920’s, and were particularly infamous for stealing from and occasionally murdering our patrons (I know, we are kinda rough this year).  In the end, we burned ourselves to the ground rather than surrender to authorities and we are now back to haunt all of YOU.  One of the coolest parts of the invitation is that our genius graphic designer friend Pete photoshopped our faces into an old timey photo and I am obsessed with it.  Meg wrote out the addresses in this awesome gold pen, and also traced some of the lines of the invite, which I think is such a lovely touch.  You can never have too much gold.  We also added these cute little jeweled spiders we found from Target.  They were initially supposed to be a token that people needed to get in, but then the rookie invitation designer (i.e., me) totally forgot to include that bit.  Whoops.  Still pretty though.  Also, just disregard the little phrase “the eve of” before the party date.  I was trying to get cute with the wording.  Which is fine, until you realize that “the eve of” means “the night before,” which was absolutely not my intention.  Oh well, can’t win them all.

could you perhaps share the wording you used on the newspaper article? Came across all this And was thinking doing something similar for this up coming Halloween…You have such great ideas. thanks a bunch

Hi Cahy! Here is the wording:

The remaining building associated with the Prohibition-era Wicked Web speakeasy is scheduled to be torn down on October 27th. The planned demolition is the result of demands by the general public following a series of mysterious disappearances in the surrounding area. Locals called for the demolition of the remains of the Wicked Web speakeasy after an area couple went missing earlier this year.
The story of the Wicked Web establishment is an urban legend in the Charlotte area. It was a population speakeasy in the 1920’s run by Nathaniel and Alice Craven, and her sister Ava. On October 26, 1926, the trio burned themselves alive in the building rather than surrendering to authorities during the police raid.

I love this SO much. I go absolutely nuts with Halloween (last year ours was a Haunted Circus…..gypsy caravan, fire jugglers, contortionists, mimes, things like that), and this year have planned a Haunted Speakeasy theme. Can I borrow your graphic designer friend? Would love to have him make me a similar invite for my party this year…… thanks! And once again – truly, truly fabulous!
